Last updated 26/08/2025 – Reading time: 2 min
From January 1, 2024, companies with an annual turnover of less than DKK 10 million in certain industries must use digital cash registers.
The cash register must comply with the new legal requirements set out in the VAT Executive Order.
Who do the new rules apply to?
The new cash register regulations apply especially to industries where cash sales are prevalent, including:
- Cafes, pubs and discos
- Pizzerias, grills and ice cream parlors
- Grocers and convenience stores
- Restaurants & Bars
What happens if the cash register doesn't comply with the law?
It is the management’s responsibility to ensure that the company’s cash registers comply with the requirements.
If the Tax Agency determines during an inspection that the rules are not being followed, the company can be fined:
- First inspection: 10,000 DKK.
- Second inspection: 20,000 DKK.
- Third inspection: 30,000 DKK.
In addition, daily fines of at least DKK 1,000 per day can be issued as long as the company does not comply with the legislation.
